Proposition 8: The Will of the People

Here in California, there is a major ballet initiative called Proposition 8 which has been drafted to protect the definition of marriage as between one man and one woman, as was determined by a vote. In May, the California Supreme Court overruled the referendum, essentially denying the will of the people.

Prop 8 will define marriage in the California Constitution as the voters determined, protecting the peoples’ decision against that of the Court. The consequences for not passing Prop 8 would be severe, as state courts across the country could ignore the will of the people and determine on their own what a state would recognize as marriage.

Regardless of your stance is on marriage, we should see this as an issue of democracy, not morals. We cannot afford to set precedents that allow courts to legislate against the will of the people. Please visit protectmarriage.com and contribute anything you can, even if you aren’t a California resident, to ensure the passing of Prop 8. The opposition has a significant lobby, and they’ve been constantly running misleading ads like the one below.

Ads like this want you to believe that the question is who can marry. In fact, the question is who decides who can marry, and represents who decides laws in general. It’s the will of the people against the opinions of a few judges.

UPDATE: Google has publicly announced it’s opposition to Proposition 8 (H/T Free Republic). Not only is it inappropriate for an employer to take a public stance on a democratic issue on behalf of its employees (as if not a single employee supports Prop 8), but this also shows just how powerful the opposition is.
