As the House ended their session today and headed for vacation, Republicans took a stand that may well help their chances come November. As energy prices have risen to levels unacceptable to Americans and Democrats have stood pat on their “no drilling” stance, House Republicans have created a stark and important contrast between the two parties in this election year.
As Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats adjourned, leaving Americans without any signs of relief for high gasoline prices, Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and a few House Republicans refused to leave without a vote on offshore drilling. The lights and the microphones were shut off, but several Republicans stayed. Politico was covering the story, while C-SPAN had ended its coverage. The revolt has now ended, after more than five hours.
Today’s display in the House today sends a message: Republicans in the House will not tolerate the high energy prices as they are, while the Democrats have no intention of helping you out. Plain and simple. Obama has said as much, and so has Pelosi. You have a clear choice in November.
UPDATE: Barack Obama is now saying he may support offshore drilling if it helps get legislation to pass. This would be a reasonable flip flop, as I explained earlier when McCain changed his prior stance. Obama’s flip flop may have something to do with an apparent “Gang of 10″ that has formed and offered an energy plan, and the majority of Americans who now support drilling domestically.
